The Venezuelan Floods
December 1999
The Rains Came

Throughout the month of December and January 1999, Venezuela was subjected to weeks and weeks of torrential rain. The locals admitted to never having seen rain like it and the tiny desert Peninsula was no longer a desert. The few driveable roads were washed out and streets with inadequate drains flooded...which was pretty much every street. It wasn't anywhere near as devastating as the flooding and mud slides going on in Caracas  6 hours away, where thousands of people died. People didn't lose their lives on the Peninsula, but many homes were badly damaged and the infrastructure was in chaos. The floods in my town of Adicora caused inconvenience more than anything.
