Thanksgiving in Lawson!!

Saturday Nov 4 – Helen woke up early this morning jumping around excited because it was cold outside and she wanted to go for a walk...I on the other hand opted for staying inside; I had found my spot—the sofa. A big LONG comfortable one that enabled me to stretch out and relax. My sister Cathy had sent 2 coats up with my Mom from Texas for us to wear during our two week stay. Now there would be no holding Helen back, she had a coat and could play in the cold while exploring ‘small town USA.” Helen went to check out ‘Main Street’, I went to sleep—ahhh “Life was good!”
The incredible smell of a home-cooked Murkan breakfast eagerly supplied by Ma Strider greeted Helen on her return from her ‘adventure’ and brought me out of my sleep. (I guess Mark was getting a little tired of arepas for breakfast!) Bacon, scrambled eggs, biscuits and gravy!!!! Woohooo...Life continued to be good!
In amongst the cooking of breakfast, there was Thanksgiving food being cooked as well! I had to wonder how anyone could have such a big breakfast when Mark knew that we would be having a huge lunch as well.
Other members of the family, armed with more food, started arriving closer to lunch time. It didn't seem to matter that we had a house full of food, everyone who came through the door entered with a truck load more! I had never in my life seen so many desert dishes from which to choose! Pumpkin, pecan and coconut cream pies..not to mention the banana pudding! Turkey, dressing, sweet potatoes, every vegetable imaginable…and everyone brought their ‘special dish’….different kinds of salads, casseroles, and other ‘family secret recipes’.
To give our bellies a break from all the food, Mark was eager to take the mustang out for a spin and show me some of the rural Missouri countryside. I noticed these large round things in the fields that we had passed and asked Mark what they were. It seems ‘hay’ is cut and then rolled into large ‘balls’ for feeding to the cattle during the winter…it doesn’t grow that way??...how strange!! "insert a roll of eyes here!!".
We ate, visited, ate, slept, ate…..then just to make sure….we ate AGAIN…I think Thanksgiving is a holiday that I will continue to enjoy!! I enjoyed the tastes and atmosphere of my first Thanksgiving dinner, and I was happy to share it with such a welcoming family!!
Thank you Debbie, Richard and everyone for making it a special and memorable visit for us.
