The Hedrick Cemetery
Tuesday Nov 7 - One of the most exciting aspects of our trip, was 'going back to my roots' and having the pleasure of taking a trip to Salem, MO to find the cemeteries of my Hedrick ancestors. Not only did we find these fabulous old cemeteries, but we were also able to visit with some of my aunts that I hadn't seen in over 20 years.
I can't begin to describe the wonderful sense of peace and emotion that I felt while walking among my ancestor’s final resting place. After having compiled our family tree this year, there was a huge sense of familiarity with all the names that we read, knowing the hardships that they all went through just to survive those difficult pioneer days.
Many thanks to Ken Fiebelman, a wealth of information and local historian. Ken runs a fantastic antique store in Salem and is a Hedrick descendant himself. He supplied us with great directions, photographs of my Great-Great grandparents and their children, Ozark Heritage books and his own personal recollections.

We visited The Williams Cemetery, The Boss Cemetery and The Hedrick Cemetery all along highway 32 between Salem and Bixby. The Hedrick Cemetery is the most difficult to get to and isn't visible from #32.
There is no longer a Crooked Creek sign on #32 however, there are 2 yellow and black creek markers, of which Crooked Creek is the second. At this second yellow and black marker, turn left onto a gravel road marked Iron Co. #86 (there was a small green road sign when we visited...I hope it stays). Travel about 2.3 miles continually veering to the left whenever the road forks. You will eventually come to a dead-end on a property marked as 'Kates Place - Miss Ellie of Bixby'. The cemetery is on their property, however by law, they are required to grant access to family members. Since you have to leave your car parked here, it would be advisable to make your intentions known before you go trekking over her land. When we visited the lady at the house, she was guarded, yet friendly, and after a short question and answer period that established my right to be there, she gave us permission to visit and gave directions on how to get there.
It is possible to continue on in a 4WD, if the owner permits it, if not, the next mile to the cemetery will have to be walked and this requires wading across a creek, since there is no bridge. The depth of the creek will depend on the season. When we crossed, it was about ankle deep and quite cold. After the creek, there is a steep climb until you get to the top of the bluff where there is a lake and a passage through the trees to the opening of the cemetery. The view is spectacular and certainly worth the trip.
I have included headstone photos of my direct Hedrick ancestors on this page but only recorded the other stones in the cemetery on video. I will supply as much text transcript of the legible ones as is possible as well. This information and the pics are for public use, so feel free to copy them. If you need more information or have a comment, please use the guest book or email me.

"I am....because they were"
Dear Ancestor

Your tombstone stands among the rest;
neglected and alone
The name and date are chiseled out
on polished, marbled stone
It reaches out to all who care
It is too late to mourn
You did not know that I exist
You died and I was born.
Yet each of us are cells of you
in flesh, in blood, in bone.
Our blood contracts and beats a pulse
entirely not our own.
Dear Ancestor, the place you filled
one hundred years ago
Spreads out among the ones you left
who would have loved you so.
I wonder if you lived and loved,
I wonder if you knew
That someday I would find this spot,
and come to visit you.

Salem, Missouri
The Williams Cemetery
The Williams Cemetery is on highway #32 about 10 miles out of Salem going to towards Boss on the left. It's very easy to miss the driveway as it's only marked by a wire gate with a faded Williams Cemetery sign. We found the gate closed, but not locked..that's not to say that it might not be locked sometimes. We aren't sure who maintains the cemetery. It only houses a few Williams family graves and is quite small, set amongst some trees.
