Smuggler's Cove
'Smuggler's Cove' is the name we have given to the most northern tip of the peninsular called Cabo San Román. We took a drive up the northern road from Adicora and past the Salt Lakes and ended up at a dead-end beach. It seems to be impossible to drive any further even though we could see a lighthouse in the distance on the point. Perhaps we'll find a way of getting there one day.
The beach itself was beautiful and isolated. There was an old tanker that had been wedged in the sand for many years and a beach side lobster restaurant. There was only a couple of people there the day that we went.
We had been warned that it would be dangerous to travel this road and to come here at night as the restaurant is supposedly owned by the local 'smuggler'. With his vantage point of open sea and the isolation, it wouldn't be hard to understand!
The restaurant was more of an upmarket beach shack and he had some very exotic parrots there. The lobster wasn't as good as we had hoped though..we've certainly had better!
Las Cumaraguas
Médano Caribe

Between the Pink Salt Lakes and Smuggler's Cove, there is an abandoned hotel resort called Médano Caribe at Las Cumaraguas. To get to it, there is one short dirt road that crosses over the salt lakes to the coast. No one seems to be able to tell us exactly why it is abandoned, but it is situated in an incredible location very accessible to Aruba if a ferry was in place, which we think was the original idea. It is a massive complex and a lot of thought has gone into the design but has been left totally to ruin. The tennis courts, bike tracks, skate board tube and pool area all are overgrown and abandoned.
We heard that it was a flourishing resort, totally self-contained with the main hotel and also independent private cabañas. There is talk that the government found some sort of corruption going on there and closed it down and took it over with every intent of keeping it going..but obviously that isn't the case! Just another mañana project for this government apparently..but oh..what a waste!!
