Strider sneaks another baby into the house!

During my trip back to Australia in April, 2001, I found that in his loneliness, Mark had adopted yet another abandoned animal into our household. This time, it was an almost dead kitten, barely 4 weeks old and in a terrible mess. Vinnie found him on the porch one night and was growling at him. Mark took him in and like a typical man with a baby, fed it steak and sardines!

I came home to find a dirty, hairless little bundle that looked more like a gremlin than a kitten. How he survived the diet that Mark had him on, I'll never know! I gave him a much needed bath which turned the water black. He seemed to be covered in black muck, as if he had been dumped in a shallow swamp of mud or something.

We named him Sooner after Mark's favourite college football team, the Oklahoma Sooners and gave him a birth date of March 15, 2001. We figure that he is now about 8 weeks old and improving every day. It has taken 2 baths so far to try to get the dirt off him and he still has some more to go, but he has started to grow his fur back and he is a beautiful ginger and white underneath! I did get ring worms from him on my left boob and arm from when I used to nurse him, but what the heck..how could you not! He was in need of so much hugging. He plays with Vinnie (who is just a bit rough with him) and he does his doo-doo's outside!

He has developed a hilarious personality and is a constant source of amusement for us. We are glad he made it through and that Vinnie didn't just decide to eat him when she found him!

P.S from Sooner
"Don't tell anyone, but word has it around town about these 2 gringos take in abandoned animals!
I knew I would be fine if I could just get myself there...and I was right! Meowww! :)

May 2nd, 2008
Sooner passed away today, just over 7 years since we first found him. He had feline leukemia, and although he never showed signs of it, the symptoms came all too quickly towards the end. We did get him a much needed transfusion in March 2008, but he responded very little to the treatment. He died naturally in my arms at the animal hospital at 11.30am. I can't tell you how much joy this bright, funny, amazingly smart cat brought to our lives considering the state he was in when we found him. He shouldn't have lived past a few months, but live he did..and oh what adventures we all had together. Thank you Sooner for coming into our lives..we will miss you, but never forget you.
